Seeing the Labyrinth as a Straight Line; Part I

The Danish Institute in Damascus, 2010

Seeing the Labyrinth as a straight Line examines the Artist in the combined position of traveller and cartographer.

By using technology to produce empirical data my movement through the city is recorded.

The lines show the unreliable and distracting nature of moving through unfamiliar territory, as well as giving an impression of the labyrinthine layout of the ancient capital centre.

The focus is on the old city as mapped by the explorer Carsten Niebuhr in 1766. In only a few days he walked the city by foot and recorded its position before moving on.
